Broad strikes after Collingwood ton in Bangladesh

Paul Collingwood completed an impressive century and Stuart Broad grabbed two quick wickets as England put Bangladesh under pressure in the first Test on Saturday.

All-rounder Collingwood smashed four sixes and 10 fours in a 188-ball 145 for his 10th Test hundred before England declared their first innings closed at a mammoth 599-6 in the second session.

Bangladesh faltered in reply as they reached 27-2 at tea on the second day, with fit-again paceman Broad removing opener Imrul Kayes (four) and Junaid Siddique (seven) in a sharp opening spell.

Bangladesh continued to struggle for success for a second successive day as they could grab just three wickets in more than a session, with key spinners Abdur Razzak and Shakib Al Hasan both giving away more than 100 runs.

England's batting flourished from the beginning, with skipper Alastair Cook (173), Collingwood and Ian Bell (84) all making the most of a mediocre Bangladeshi attack on an easy-paced track.

Collingwood and Bell fell playing big shots just before the declaration. Both were caught in the deep, but not before strengthening their team's position with a 184-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Bell hit nine fours in his 105-ball knock.

Cook earlier cracked two sixes and 16 fours in his career-best knock. His previous best in Tests was 160 against the West Indies at home last year.

He looked set to complete his maiden Test double-century before falling to off-spinner Mohammad Mahmudullah in the morning session, offering an easy return catch while attempting to pull a long-hop.

Left-handed Cook, leading England for the first time in Tests, could add only 15 to his overnight score of 158.

But there was no respite for Bangladesh as Collingwood and Bell continued to gather runs comfortably.
